For the past few weeks, we have been working on our Discourse papers. And now it’s time to review our progress.
The key points that we have to focus on were Writing as a Recursive Process, Integration of ideas, Document Work using Appropriate Conventions, and Engagement.
First on the list is Writing as a Recursive Process. In my essay, I believe that I managed to satisfy this relatively well. My writing process, aside from in class activities and formulating ideas, consisted of three drafts. The final two drafts ended up the most similar, that is where I focused on refinement instead of completely renovating it. Taking my professor’s cues, in the end I remade my introduction. The rest of the essay remained much the same as draft #2 though.
Next was Integration of Ideas with Those of Others. The paper called to use three sources: Gee, Delpit, and a film. Their voices can be heard all throughout the essay. Either by paraphrasing or direct quotes. The film provided numerous examples. And I believe that I was able to achieve a sort of conversation between the sources and myself. Their thoughts helped to bring a bigger complexity to the piece.
The third thing was Document Work using Appropriate Conventions. My essay contained rightly sourced quotes and minimal errors in it. There were initial errors in my second draft that were later correct for the final draft. Any questions were researched and spoken with my tutor for advice on how to best cite them.
Finally, the last big piece was Engagement. As of now, I have yet to skip a class and have been attentive for all in class discussions. I try to participate without becoming a dominant voice in the room and complete all assignments to the best of my ability. One thing that I lack is creativity in trying for new methods. I have fallen into a lull in that area, at the moment I have a writing style that I’m comfortable with and tend to stay with it unless required to change. This is also the same for how I read. It is also true that when it comes to mistakes and finding ways to review, there is room for improvement.
Overall though, I think that it has been a solid month of writing.
