The Carya ovata is of the Plantae kingdom. Its family is the Juglandaceae which is where all walnut type trees are joined (Mill). This native tree is better known by its common name, the shagbark hickory.  It is a medium to large tree as records show it can reach to 40 meters tall and over a meter in diameter.
